Opal Aged Care appoints new CEO

Hospitality chief Rachel Argaman announced as new Opal Aged Care Chief Executive signalling new focus and direction

Sydney, 18 May 2018: Opal Aged Care (Opal) today announced the appointment of Rachel Argaman as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 6 August 2018.

Rachel is a highly-experienced executive in the hospitality and accommodation sector, previously serving as CEO of TFE Hotels (previously Toga Hospitality). TFE Hotels is one of the region’s fastest growing hotel and hospitality management companies with more than 3,000 employees across five countries covering 73 hotels, since 2007.

The Opal Aged Care Board considered her strong hospitality and accommodation sector experience advantageous as the organisation balances the demand for high-resident clinical care standards and providing a living experience more akin to a home environment.

Opal Chairman Prof Peter Shergold, AC said: “We are delighted Rachel has agreed to join us. As a Board we intentionally broadened our search for a Chief Executive beyond the aged and community care sector. We have a strong view that our business, and the sector in general, must evolve from an institutional-style care environment to one that is more aligned to the qualities of the home.

“Rachel’s strong leadership, passion for the customer and impeccable stakeholder management skills were honed during a distinguished career in the hospitality industry over two decades. While her experience in leading such a complex organisation gives Rachel a solid foundation in managing a highly- regulated business, the Board also welcomes her fresh perspective on how we refine and improve the experience of our residents and families across all our residential facilities.”

Rachel’s experience encompasses significant infrastructure management oversight of an active property development and acquisition program. Her 20 years at TFE Hotels includes roles in sales and marketing and operational leadership. With a strong focus on building a high-performing culture through attracting the best team and driving absolute accountability, Rachel has successfully led the expansion and success of TFE Hotels during her tenure.

Prof. Shergold emphasised that: “Rachel will ensure that Opal continues to adapt its business, to meet the needs and expectations of residents. The Board is confident that her influence on culture and customer experience will assist the organisation to evolve while continuing to deliver the highest in residential specialist care and customer satisfaction.”

The Opal Board appointed Korn Ferry to initiate a global CEO search on 27 November 2017 following the resignation of Gary Barnier. Sean Bilton was appointed Acting Managing Director and will return to the role of Head of Commercial, with responsibility for managing Opal’s strategic growth initiatives working closely with the new CEO.

“We thank Sean for his strong leadership of Opal over the last six months. He and his Executive Group have been very effective in managing the organisation over this period. They will provide an experienced team to support Rachel,” said Prof Shergold.
